Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze the contents and proportion of ocular health in Korean textbooks.
Methods: A total of 512 textbooks which include 170 elementary school textbooks, 160 middle school textbooks, and 182 high school textbooks were analyzed. The number of both rows of ocular health and textbooks which include ocular health were counted. General health contents were defined to exclude ocular health contents such as ocular disease, ocular structure, and ocular function.
Results: 144 textbooks include general health contents and account for 28.2 percent of total textbooks. 32 textbooks include ocular health contents and account for 6.3 percent of total textbooks. Ocular health contents(total 334.3 rows) are less than general health contents (total 3,439 rows) in textbooks. Ocular health contents exist narrowly in certain grade level textbooks and in certain content in small proportions.
Conclusions: The need for revision of ocular health contents in Korean textbooks was confirmed through analyzing the present condition of ocular health concepts in Korean textbooks. Acquiring ocular health concepts will have a positive effect on public health. This study will be used as basic material for revision of textbooks.
